History Improv THE ROYALS 12:30-1:30pm PST
THIS CLASS IS ALMOST FULL
$65* a month per student ages 9+
Each week we will learn about a new event or person in History. Lessons will be taught in collaboration with the students and fun facts they bring in each week. We then bring in a theatrical spin to what we’ve learned and act out these historical figures and moments with improvisation games and character exploration living it on our feet and sometime rewriting history in the process. Our students need no previous experience in theatre or history to enjoy this program. We take all levels. It should be noted that history does have some mature content and while we will be very sensitive to this, our suggested age range for the class should be taken into consideration. Please let us know if you have questions, concerns or need to discuss.
June: Lambert Simnel, Catherine de Medici, Queen Elizabeth I and Rudolf II.
July: Dmitry the Pretender, Queen Nzinga, Sophia Dorothea of Celle and Philip V of Spain.
Homework: Each week students are asked to bring in five fun facts about each figure assigned.
Hans Christian Anderson 1:45-2:45pm PST
THIS CLASS IS ALMOST FULL
$65* a month per student ages 7-10
Hans Christian Anderson was a writer of plays, novels and poems but is MOST famous for his fairy tales. We will explore his many stories as well as an intro to acting and physical character exploration. Through active creative exercises and theatre games, students will learn how to create a character, understand this great writer’s stories, and use their voices and bodies to convey the dramatic and comedic stories. This program provides a safe, fun and supportive atmosphere where students will be encouraged to make bold and creative acting choices, while also developing new levels of personal confidence, finding their voice and ensemble skills while learning this great story. Our classes favor physical movement and active learning over traditional lectures. The richness of the lessons lies more in the doing and feeling than in the intellectualizing of material.
Hamlet 3-5pm PST
Mondays: June 15 - Aug 3, 2020
$110* a month per student ages 11+
Get ready to spend a summer with the melancholy Dane as we take a deep dive into one of the most famous texts in the English language. In this class we will be reading and discussing the entirety of Shakespeare's Hamlet. We will travel with the young prince as he is haunted by the ghost of his murdered father and by his own struggles with revenge and moral obligation. Students will read the play each week on their own and aloud with one another via zoom and then discuss in detail the plots, characters, themes and symbols that are found in this incredibly rich and rewarding play. We will cover the entire play in the 8 weeks of June and July so a two month commitment is ideal but not required.
D&D Creative Writing 6:30-8pm PST
Mondays: July 6 - Aug 10, 2020
$125* per student ages 10+
Join us as we apply creative story writing, character exploration and storytelling through the vehicle of the ever popular fantasy building tabletop role-playing game D&D. Each student will create their own character which will then embark upon a made-up adventure. Our teacher will be our Dungeon Master serving as the game’s referee and storyteller. Students will work as a group and do a weekly character writing journal and take turns updating the weekly story summary journal. Not only learning logic and problem solving, this will be a creative adventure for all! Please note: The content can often be dark but we will strive to avoid anything too dark or demonic. *this program will take place on Roll20.net in addition to Zoom.
